North West Direction in Vastu (Vayavya Disha)

What the North West direction stands for

In vastu shastra, the North West or Vayavya direction is guarded by Vayu and linked with Moon (Chandra). Its element is air, and the zone is read for movement, friendships, guests and support. When people search "vayavya disha vastu" or "north west direction vastu", this is the meaning they are looking for.

Each direction covers a 45 degree slice of your home, measured from the centre. The North West zone is not just one wall; it is the whole wedge of floor that falls between its two neighbouring directions. That is why a room can be partly in one zone and partly in another, and why most advice is about what you place in the zone rather than how walls are built.

• Deity: Vayu
• Planet: Moon (Chandra)
• Element: Air
• Theme: movement, friendships, guests and support
• Colours: white, cream, silver grey

Best rooms and things for the North West

Traditional texts suggest using the North West for guest room, garage, store for finished goods, daughters' room. These activities match the zone's theme of movement, friendships, guests and support. If your layout already places one of them here, you are using the direction in its classic way.

Try to avoid the main safe in this zone. If that is not possible, keep the area clean, well lit and uncluttered, and add a colour from the white, cream, silver grey family.

How to use these vastu tips calmly

Vastu shastra is the traditional Indian way of arranging a home so that light, air and daily activity flow comfortably. It links each of the eight directions and the centre with an element, a guardian deity and a planet. Most of its advice is practical common sense written in the language of the sky: morning light in the east, heavy things in the south west, an open centre and a clean entrance.

Nothing here needs demolition or expensive change. If a room is not in the ideal direction, families simply adjust what is inside: a lamp, a colour, the way a bed or desk faces, a plant, or a clear corner. Vastu works best as a gentle way to make a space feel lighter, not as a set of rules to worry about.

Rented flats, compact apartments and homes abroad all have limits. Use what you can, enjoy the space you have and treat the rest as optional reading.

1. Stand at the centre of the home with a phone compass
2. Mark north, then the eight directions on a simple floor sketch
3. Note which room sits in each direction
4. Pick two or three easy changes from this page
5. Keep the home clean, lit and airy, which matters most

North West in astrology (jyotish) and numerology (ank jyotish)

Moon (Chandra) links the North West with astrology (jyotish). People whose birth chart (janam kundli) shows a strong Moon often enjoy this part of the house. In numerology, Moon also has its own number, so some families match a room's use to the owner's mulank. These links are traditional ideas for reflection, not rules.

If you want to see how your own planets sit, a free kundli (muft janam kundli) shows the strong and soft areas of your chart. Our full kundli report reads them in simple language.
