Ekadashi kab hai is one of the most searched questions in India, more than half a million times a month. The answer changes every fortnight, because Ekadashi follows the Moon, not the solar calendar. Each Ekadashi has its own name and story, from Kamada in spring to Dev Uthani after Diwali.
On this page every date is calculated from the real positions of the Sun and Moon, not copied from a printed list. You get the observance date in India, the exact moment the tithi begins and ends, the lunar month and paksha, and a short note on what makes each Ekadashi special.

How these dates are calculated
- Sun and Moon positions come from an astronomy engine, with the Lahiri ayanamsa for the sidereal zodiac.
- Dates follow the tithi running at sunrise in New Delhi. When a tithi starts and ends between two sunrises, it is shown on the day it begins. Festivals with an evening or moonrise rule, such as Diwali, Karwa Chauth or Holika Dahan, can fall a day earlier than the sunrise date; their own pages give the festival date.
- Lunar months are named from the Sun's sidereal sign at the preceding new Moon, the amanta rule; an Adhik maas is marked when two new Moons fall in one sign.
- For cities abroad, the same tithi window shifts to local time; your city panchang shows it.
What is Ekadashi
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to move 12 degrees ahead of the Sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month, fifteen in the bright half (Shukla paksha) and fifteen in the dark half (Krishna paksha). Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each half. Tradition links it with Lord Vishnu, and many families keep a light fast or eat simple falahari food on the day.
Because a tithi lasts anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours, it rarely lines up with a calendar day. Sometimes Ekadashi touches two sunrises, sometimes none. Calendars then follow fixed rules, which is why two printed calendars can differ by a day.
The 24 Ekadashis and their months
Each lunar month has two Ekadashis, one in each paksha. Names below follow the amanta month, where the month ends on Amavasya; North Indian purnimanta calendars name the Krishna paksha Ekadashi after the next month, but the day itself is the same.
| Lunar month | Shukla Ekadashi | Krishna Ekadashi |
|---|---|---|
| Chaitra | Kamada | Varuthini |
| Vaishakha | Mohini | Apara |
| Jyeshtha | Nirjala | Yogini |
| Ashadha | Devshayani | Kamika |
| Shravana | Shravana Putrada | Aja |
| Bhadrapada | Parivartini | Indira |
| Ashwin | Papankusha | Rama |
| Kartik | Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) | Utpanna |
| Margashirsha | Mokshada | Saphala |
| Pausha | Pausha Putrada | Shattila |
| Magha | Jaya | Vijaya |
| Phalguna | Amalaki | Papmochani |
| Adhik maas | Padmini | Parama |
Ekadashis most families talk about
Dev Uthani Ekadashi

Comes twice, in Shravana and in Pausha. Tradition links it with blessings for children.
How an Ekadashi day is usually kept
Customs vary widely. Some keep a nirjala fast, many keep a phalahar fast, and many simply eat sattvic food. All of these are traditional.
- Dashami, the day before, many families eat a simple early dinner.
- On Ekadashi the day starts with a bath and a short Vishnu puja or tulsi puja.
- Food is light: fruit, milk, sabudana, kuttu, singhara or samak rice, with sendha namak.
- Rice and grains are left out in most traditions.
- The evening has aarti, bhajan or a reading of the Ekadashi katha.
- Parana, opening the fast, happens on Dwadashi morning after sunrise, within the time printed in the calendar.
