How these dates are calculated
- Sun and Moon positions come from an astronomy engine, with the Lahiri ayanamsa for the sidereal zodiac.
- Dates follow the tithi running at sunrise in New Delhi. When a tithi starts and ends between two sunrises, it is shown on the day it begins. Festivals with an evening or moonrise rule, such as Diwali, Karwa Chauth or Holika Dahan, can fall a day earlier than the sunrise date; their own pages give the festival date.
- Lunar months are named from the Sun's sidereal sign at the preceding new Moon, the amanta rule; an Adhik maas is marked when two new Moons fall in one sign.
- For cities abroad, the same tithi window shifts to local time; your city panchang shows it.
What is Amavasya
Amavasya is the thirtieth tithi, when the Moon sits close to the Sun and is not visible. It closes Krishna paksha. In amanta calendars, used in Gujarat, Maharashtra and South India, the lunar month ends on Amavasya.
Names below use the common North Indian purnimanta naming, so the Amavasya in the amanta month of Ashwin is called Kartik Amavasya, the Diwali season new Moon.

- Many families remember ancestors with a simple tarpan of water, til and kusha grass.
- Food may be offered to cows, crows or dogs, an old custom of sharing.
- Some homes light a diya under a peepal tree in the evening.
- Many keep the day simple and quiet, with a light sattvic meal.
Amavasya in the sky
- The Moon rises and sets with the Sun, so the night sky is darkest.

- The next evening's thin crescent is chandra darshan, the start of Shukla paksha.
- Stargazing is at its best around Amavasya.
