Diwali 2026: date and Lakshmi puja time in your city

QUICK ANSWER
Diwali, Deepavali, the festival of lights, falls on Kartik Amavasya, the darkest night of the month. Homes are lit with diyas, families worship Maa Lakshmi and Ganesh ji, and the five day festival runs from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj.
In 2026, Amavasya begins late on the morning of 8 November in India and covers the evening of 8 November, so Lakshmi puja is on Sunday 8 November. For families abroad the date stays the same in most cities, but the clock time of puja changes a lot, which is why we calculate it city by city.
Diwali 2026 five day calendar
Monday 9 November is the gap day. Amavasya ends at midday and Pratipada begins, so it is not used for Lakshmi puja or for Govardhan puja in most calendars.
| Day | Date | Festival | Main ritual |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fri 6 Nov | Dhanteras | Buying new items, Dhanvantari puja |
| 2 | Sun 8 Nov morning | Narak Chaturdashi | Abhyang snan before sunrise |
| 3 | Sun 8 Nov evening | Diwali | Lakshmi Ganesh puja, diyas |
| 4 | Tue 10 Nov | Govardhan puja | Annakut, Govardhan parikrama |
| 5 | Wed 11 Nov | Bhai Dooj | Tilak for brothers |
Lakshmi puja muhurat 2026
Lakshmi puja is done in pradosh kaal, the roughly 2 hour 24 minute window after sunset, ideally when the fixed (sthir) Vrishabh lagna is rising. In Delhi on 8 November, sunset is around 5:30 PM and pradosh kaal runs until about 8 PM. Vrishabh lagna rises in the early evening in India too, which is why most calendars give a puja window between about 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM IST.
Business families also do Chopda puja or Sharda puja for new account books, and Kali puja is done at midnight in Bengal and Assam on the same night.
