Dhanteras 2026: date, puja muhurat and what to buy

QUICK ANSWER
Dhanteras, or Dhantrayodashi, is the first of the five days of Diwali. Families worship Maa Lakshmi, Kuber and Bhagwan Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods who is said to have risen from the ocean with the pot of amrit on this tithi.
It is also India's biggest shopping day for gold, silver, utensils and new items for the home. Buying something new on Dhanteras is a tradition of welcoming abundance, not a must.
