KUNDLI MATCHING

How many gunas should match for marriage? 18, 24 and 28 explained

By KismatAstro editorial desk · Published 28 September 2026 · Updated 28 September 2026

Eighteen out of 36 is the traditional minimum in North Indian Ashtakoota. Scores from 18 to 24 are read as workable, 25 to 32 as very good, and 33 to 36 as excellent. A high total can still hide a zero in Nadi or Bhakoot, so the eight kootas matter more than the headline number.

This guide sits with the kundli matching hub. Use the match two kundlis when you want the calculator rather than the essay.

Where 36 comes from

Ashtakoota, the eight-koota system used in most North Indian rishta talks, compares the couple's Moon nakshatras and rashis. The points are fixed: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7, Nadi 8. Add them and you have 36. Guna milan is the everyday name for that total. If someone quotes a score out of 20 or uses different houses, they are on another method, often a South Indian porutham, and the numbers cannot be compared.

KismatAstro's kundli matching runs this from both birth charts, and it also notes Mars. Matching by name is the version you use when the birth time was never written down. Say which one produced the number. A 26 from names and a 19 from charts are not an average of 22. They are two readings.

The bands people actually argue about

Below 18

Tradition calls this low. It usually means several kootas disagreed, or one of the heavy ones scored zero and the light ones could not cover it. The useful question is which row failed. A missing point of Varna is not the same story as Nadi at zero. Below 18 is a reason to slow down and read the chart, not a siren.

18 to 24

This is the workable band, and 18 is the famous minimum. Families who grew up on one sentence, '18 se neeche nahi', are quoting this floor. Inside the band, 18 and 24 do not feel the same in the room. 18 often needs a clean Nadi and a Bhakoot that is either full or classically cancelled. 24 gives elders less to negotiate. Neither number knows whether you laugh at the same things.

25 to 32, and the talk about 28

Very good, in the usual wording. 28 sits here, which is why forwards call it a love score or a safe score. It is neither. It is a strong total. You can still have Bhakoot at zero inside a 28 if the other kootas ran high, though it is less common than people fear. Open the eight rows. If someone will only hear one number, 28 is a comfortable one to hear, and it is still not a character reference.

33 to 36

Excellent, and uncommon. A 36 is not a medal and not a prediction of an easy marriage. It means the eight comparisons agreed. The rest of both kundlis, the 7th house, the dashas, Mangal dosha, were not inside those eight rows. Do not skip them because the total looked perfect.

Why the total lies if you only read the total

Nadi is 8 points and Bhakoot is 7. Together they are 15, almost half the test. A couple can score in the mid-20s and still show a zero that a grandparent will ask about before the tea is poured. Bhakoot dosh is the 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 placement of the two moon signs. Tradition links 6/8 with arguments, 2/12 with money leaving the house, and 5/9 with children. Those links are the worry. They are also among the most cancelled doshas: same rashi lord, or friendly lords, sets Bhakoot aside in the classical reading. Mesh and Vrishchik, both Mars, are the example every textbook uses.

Nadi dosh is the same nadi, Adi, Madhya or Antya, on both sides. The worry people repeat is about children and health. The texts also list exceptions: same rashi with different nakshatras, same nakshatra with different padas, and cases where the rashi lords are friends. Read the Nadi guide and the Bhakoot guide before you repeat the worry without the exception. The Ashtakoota page puts all eight kootas in one place.

Love marriage, arranged marriage, second marriage

The arithmetic does not change. A love marriage that wants the families in the room often runs guna milan for exactly that reason: a shared language, not a permission slip. A low score does not undo a decision two adults have made. An arranged match with 32 gunas still needs two people who can stand each other on a Wednesday. Second marriages use the same eight kootas. The chart question for a second marriage, the 9th house and the 11th, is a different page, second marriage, and it is not a second scoring system out of 36.

A practical order for a family meeting

  • Agree the spelling or the birth times before anyone opens a calculator. Garbage in, confident number out.
  • Read the total, then Nadi, then Bhakoot, then Gana and Graha Maitri. Varna and Vashya rarely decide a match on their own.
  • Check Mangal dosha only from a timed chart. A name match has not done this. The manglik calculator is the timed check.
  • If a date is being chosen, leave the gunas and open the muhurat list. They are different questions. November 2026 and the 2027 guide are the calendars.
  • Write down the cancellation if there is one, in a sentence the whole room can hear. Most fights are about a zero nobody explained.

You cannot raise a birth-chart score by repeating the match, by donating a number of rupees someone invented, or by adding an extra letter to a name that was never in doubt. Name-score games are a different tradition and they do not edit the Moon. If the meeting needs a villain, do not make it the number 17. Make it the fact that nobody looked at which koota moved.

A note you can read aloud

If the room needs one paragraph, use this. We looked at eight traditional comparisons of the two moon stars, out of 36. The total is a band: under 18 low, 18 to 24 workable, 25 to 32 very good, 33 to 36 excellent. We also looked at Nadi and Bhakoot on their own, because those two can be zero inside a flattering total, and we named any classical cancellation instead of hiding it. This number does not decide the marriage. It tells us which conversation to have next, and the next conversation might be the charts, the date, or simply whether these two people want the same kind of Tuesday.

Then stop. More software will not produce a truer 36. A second pandit is worth it when the cancellation is in dispute, not when you want a higher integer. Write the eight rows on paper so a later meeting does not start from zero. Paper is the whole technology this system needed for centuries, and it still keeps a family honest.

What a guna score refuses to be

It is not a medical opinion about children. It is not a financial forecast. It is not a percentage chance the marriage lasts. It is a traditional comparison of two moon stars, useful when a family already speaks that language, and silent about everything the two people will actually do on a Tuesday night when they are tired. Use the bands. Then close the laptop.

Questions on this page

Is 18 gunas enough for marriage?

It is the traditional line families were taught to look for, not a pass mark that guarantees a happy home. At 18, read Nadi and Bhakoot before you celebrate the total. Many pandits prefer 24 or more when those two are clean.

Is 28 gunas a love marriage score?

No. There is no separate cutoff for love and arranged. 28 sits inside the 'very good' band of 25 to 32. Love marriages can use the same eight kootas if the families want a shared language. The score does not permit or forbid the relationship.

Can guna milan be increased?

Not honestly. The nakshatras do not change. You can apply the classical cancellations for Bhakoot and Nadi, and you can weigh Graha Maitri when Nadi is low. Changing a spelling changes a name match only, not a birth-chart match.

What if the score is below 18?

Call it low, in the traditional wording, and look at which koota caused it. Then decide as adults. A low score is a reason for a longer conversation, not a reason for a public verdict about two people.
