How to calculate your name number in numerology

The only three steps

First, write the name in Latin letters exactly as you will use it. Capitals do not matter. Spaces do not matter. A matra you cannot see in the Roman spelling still needs a decision: PRIYA and PRIYAA are different names in this arithmetic. Second, replace each letter with a number from one table and add. That sum is the compound. Third, add the digits of the compound until one digit remains. That digit is the name number, also called the destiny number of the name. It is not the mulank. The mulank comes from the birth day and never looks at a letter.

Do the first name by hand once, even if you then use the name calculator. People trust a total they have checked. The alphabet table is the same chart the calculator uses, so a disagreement means a spelling difference, not two versions of Chaldean.

Chaldean values, the Indian table

Chaldean groups letters by a traditional sound value, and it gives no letter the number 9. Nine still appears as a compound or a root, because totals can reduce to 9. The row you need: A 1, B 2, C 3, D 4, E 5, F 8, G 3, H 5, I 1, J 1, K 2, L 3, M 4, N 5, O 7, P 8, Q 1, R 2, S 3, T 4, U 6, V 6, W 6, X 5, Y 1, Z 7. F is 8, not 6. O is 7, not 6. Those two are where hand totals usually go wrong.

Worked example, PRIYA. P is 8, R is 2, I is 1, Y is 1, A is 1. Add: 8+2+1+1+1 = 13. Reduce: 1+3 = 4. The compound is 13 and the name number is 4. Number 4 is Rahu's number in this tradition, the builder, which you can read on the number 4 page without deciding that Priya must change a letter. A different woman spelled PRIYAA picks up another A, another 1, and the compound becomes 14, root 5. One letter. Different root. That is the whole method.

Pythagorean, so you can see the other total

Pythagorean is positional. A is 1, B is 2, and the alphabet cycles through 9: I is 9, J is 1 again. Every letter has a number, including a path to 9. PRIYA in that table is not 13. P is the 16th letter, 1+6 = 7 in the cycle (P sits at 7), R is 9, I is 9, Y is 7, A is 1. The point is not to memorise my arithmetic in a paragraph you cannot check. The point is that the calculator will print a second root, and you should expect it to differ. Quoting only the system that gave you the number you wanted is how numerology gets a bad name in the family WhatsApp.

Vowels, consonants, and the compound you should not skip

Destiny uses every letter. Soul urge uses vowels only: A, E, I, O, U. Personality uses the consonants. In PRIYA the vowels are I and A, both 1 in Chaldean, so the soul urge compound is 2. The consonants P, R, Y are 8, 2 and 1, compound 11, root 2. You now have three roots and one compound, which is more honest than a single digit on a sticker. Y is a consonant in this split even though English sometimes calls it a vowel. The calculator follows that rule. If you move Y, you are doing a different system. Say so.

Chaldean readers linger on the compound. 13, 19, 23 and their neighbours have reputations in the old books, some stern, some fine. A root of 4 reached through 13 is not described identically to a root of 4 reached through 22. This site's number pages describe the root and its planet. They do not turn a compound into a threat. If a reader on the internet has told you 13 is a disaster, you have left numerology and entered folklore. 13 is 1+3, and it is also just the sum of PRIYA.

Mulank beside the name, not instead of it

After the name, calculate the mulank from the birth day only. The 7th is 7. The 16th is 1+6 = 7. The 29th is 11, then 2. Compare the name root with that mulank using the friendship chart, which the mulank page and the number pages both point at. Friendly means the tradition reads the pair as supportive. It does not mean the name is lucky in cash, health or marriage. A name root that is not friendly is a spelling conversation, if you want one. It is not an emergency.

Baby names are the same arithmetic with more relatives in the room. Get the birth day first, on the baby name page, then try spellings. Do not lock a spelling to force number 5 and then discover the child was born on a day whose mulank wanted something else. Shop names and company names follow the same addition. Phone numbers are a different addition

A mobile number adds digits, not letters. Do not run a phone through the Chaldean alphabet. The method is on mobile number numerology, and the tool is the mobile calculator. Vehicle plates mix letters and digits. Use the vehicle page rather than forcing the plate through the name table and ignoring the digits, or the reverse.

Check the total twice, then stop

The mistakes are boring and worth listing. Dropping a surname halfway. Treating Y as a vowel. Using Pythagorean values while calling the total Chaldean. Reducing every letter before adding, which is a different and wrong shortcut. Forgetting that Chaldean F is 8. Adding a title such as Kumar because it was on the form. When the hand total and the calculator disagree, one of those happened. Fix the spelling, do not average the two roots into a compromise digit that neither table produced.

Once they agree, you are done. A second spelling is a second name, not a correction. If the compound bothers a relative, read what the number page actually says about that root, including the planet, and leave the internet's disaster stories outside. What a name number cannot decide

It cannot time a wedding. That is the 7th house and the dasha, or simply the two people. It cannot tell you to leave a job or to buy a house. It cannot correct a kundli.
