Tulsi Vivah 2026: date, story and how the puja is done

The date, and the two clocks on it

Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Vishnu, observed at the end of Chaturmas. In 2026, Drik Panchang (New Delhi) places it on Saturday 21 November, the day after Dev Uthani Ekadashi. That pairing is why wedding talk and puja talk land on the same weekend. The season's first November vivah muhurat is this same Saturday.

Read that box as two layers. The festival date is cited from Drik Panchang. The sunrise tithi, sunrise nakshatra and Abhijit window are calculated by KismatAstro's Lahiri ephemeris for New Delhi, the same engine as the panchang page. At sunrise, about 6:48 am, the tithi is already Shukla Dwadashi, which matches the wedding row. The Moon is at the end of Uttara Bhadrapada and enters Revati around 6:51 am. Drik's wedding window, which starts at 6:48 am, is therefore listed under Revati. If the sunrise panchang still shows Uttara Bhadrapada, it sampled a few minutes earlier. Both can be true.

Abhijit that day, from Delhi sunrise to sunset, falls around 11:45 am to 12:28 pm IST. Use it only as the ordinary noon window. It is not a sourced Lakshmi-style puja muhurat and not a claim that every priest will sit down at 11:45. If your pandit gives a different lagna, follow the pandit. We would rather leave a minute out than invent one.

The story families actually tell

The plant is Tulsi, also called Vrinda in the older story. Vrinda was a devoted wife. Vishnu's intervention in a war between the devas and her husband, the asura king Jalandhara, is the part of the story that feels harsh if you only hear it once. The puja is not a celebration of that trick. It is the later reconciliation: Vishnu, as Shaligram, marries Tulsi, and the plant stays in the courtyard as a sign of that marriage. Homes that keep a tulsi vrindavan already know the daily lamp. This is the one day the plant is dressed as a bride.

Regional tellings differ in the details and agree on the shape. A fast, a bath, a decorated plant, an image of Vishnu or a shaligram, and the wedding rites in small form: a cloth, a thread, rice, and the women of the house singing. Some families include a sugar or molasses figure as the groom when a shaligram is not in the house. None of those variants changes the date. They change what you buy at the market the day before.

Puja steps, in the order a home usually follows

• Clean the courtyard and the tulsi pot the evening before. The plant should be one the house already tends, not a sapling bought and abandoned.
• On the morning of the 21st, bathe and set the fast the way your family keeps it. Some homes are nirjala. Many allow fruit or milk. Follow your house, not a blog's stricter version.
• Dress the plant with a small red or yellow cloth, turmeric, kumkum and flowers. Set Vishnu's image or the shaligram beside it, with a yellow cloth and tulsi leaves.
• Light the lamp and offer water, rice, and seasonal food you can actually cook. Recite the short wedding mantras your priest or your grandmother uses. A long printed paddhati is optional.
• Tie the ceremonial thread, do the circumambulation if that is your custom, and offer the aarti. Break the fast after the puja, or at the time your family names.
• Share the prasad. Many homes also send a portion to daughters and neighbours, which is the social half of the day.

You do not need a new gemstone, a new fast from a forward, or a promise about a husband's health. The vrata is a seasonal ceremony of the courtyard. People who are unwell should not skip medicine or water because a checklist said nirjala. That is not the tradition this page is describing, and it is not advice.

Who keeps the fast, and who need not

The fast is a household custom, strongest among the women who already tend the plant, and it is not a test of devotion you can fail from a blog. Unmarried daughters often help with flowers and songs without keeping a nirjala fast. Someone who is pregnant, diabetic, or simply unwell should eat. A vrata that ignores a doctor's instruction is not the ceremony this page is describing. Children can offer water and a flower. They do not need a script. If your family does not keep Tulsi Vivah at all, 21 November is still the first Delhi wedding muhurat, and you can use the date for that without borrowing a puja.

Shopping is ordinary: flowers, a length of red or yellow cloth, rice, a lamp that already works, and sweets you would send to a neighbour. You do not need a new murti every year. A shaligram that lives in the house stays the groom. A framed picture is a respectful substitute in homes that do not keep a shaligram. The plant should be healthy enough to be dressed. If the winter has been hard on it, water it the week before rather than replacing it on the morning and calling the new pot a tradition.

Tulsi Vivah and the wedding season

Dev Uthani on the 20th is the theological end of Vishnu's rest. Tulsi Vivah on the 21st is the ceremony people can see. Together they are why North Indian wedding cards start appearing in the last ten days of November 2026 and not in October. The four November muhurat dates and the seven December dates are the whole 2026 remainder. Kharmas then closes the door on 16 December.

If you are booking a baraat for the 21st, you are sharing the city with every other family who had the same idea, and you are also sharing the house with a puja. Do the puja in the morning and keep the wedding window honest: Delhi's listed muhurat runs from 6:48 am to just after midnight. Guests do not need both events explained as astrology. They need a time and an address.

For the rest of the season, stay on the 2026 muhurat page rather than collecting dates from three forwards. For the couple, not the plant, use kundli matching. Tulsi Vivah blesses a household calendar. It does not score 36 gunas, and it does not pick a spouse. If the plant in your courtyard has a name the children use, that is already the relationship the puja is about. Dress that plant. The wedding season can open around you without you hosting it. And if you are hosting it, the Delhi window on the 21st is long enough for both a morning lamp and an evening baraat, provided someone writes both times down before the relatives arrive with two different plans.

If the house is also hosting a baraat, split the day on paper the night before. Morning is the plant, the lamp, the thread and the people who live there. Evening is the guests and the address on the card. The Delhi wedding window on the 21st runs from sunrise into the next midnight, so both can fit without inventing a second puja time. What does not fit is a single vague 'subah se' that leaves the purohit and the caterer guessing. Write two clocks. The story of Tulsi and Vishnu does not require a third.
