December 2026 vivah muhurat, and why weddings stop at Kharmas

Seven dates, then a hard stop

December is the rest of the 2026 wedding season, not a new season. The four November dates have already opened it. What remains on the Drik Panchang list for New Delhi is a week at the start of the month and a weekend in the middle, and then the list stops. If you are reading this with a hall that only has Sundays in late December, those Sundays are not on the list.

2 December starts at 10:32 am and runs through to the next morning, Uttara Phalguni, Navami into Dashami. 3 December has two windows: a morning piece from 6:58 am to 10:53 am, still touching Uttara Phalguni and Hasta on Dashami, and a night piece from 11:03 pm into Ekadashi with the Moon in Hasta. 4 December is the short morning follow-on, 6:59 am to 10:22 am, Hasta, Ekadashi. Treat the 3rd and the 4th as neighbours, not as one endless day, because the night gap between them is not inside a listed window.

5 December runs from 11:48 am through the night, Swati, Dwadashi into Trayodashi. 6 December is only the early tail, 7:00 am to 7:42 am, still Swati and Trayodashi. That forty-minute morning is easy to miss if you only look at the date and not the clock. 11 December starts at 3:04 am and runs until the next morning, Uttara Ashadha, Tritiya. 12 December continues from 7:04 am all the way to 3:27 am the next night, Uttara Ashadha, Tritiya into Chaturthi. That is the last Delhi window of 2026.

Why weddings stop at Kharmas

Kharmas, also called Dhanur maas, is the solar month in which the Sun moves through Dhanu (Sagittarius). Tradition sets weddings and other new beginnings aside until the Sun enters Makar. Drik Panchang, as already used on our 2026 page, puts the start at 16 December 2026. KismatAstro's Lahiri engine places the Sun's entry into Makar on the evening of 14 January 2027, which is the Sankranti date that page already quotes. The first wedding window after the pause is Friday 15 January 2027, not the Sankranti day itself.

People sometimes hear Kharmas and picture a ban written into law. It is a panchang custom. A court marriage, a church wedding, or a family that does not follow the solar month can pick 20 December without consulting this table. What you cannot do is quote this table for a date it does not contain. If an uncle says his pandit has one more date on the 18th, ask which panchang. Regional lists differ, especially around Tuesdays and around how strictly Kharmas is drawn. We follow Drik Panchang for New Delhi and we say so.

The pause is also why December feels rushed. Vendors know the 12th is the last widely accepted Saturday. If you are choosing between a cramped 12 December and a calmer 15 January, the January date is on the 2027 list, not a compromise with an empty calendar. Read both months before you pay a hold fee you cannot move.

Night windows and the practical sort

• Overnight windows: 2, 3 (the late piece), 5 and 12 December. These are the ones that can hold a night phera.
• Morning-only: 4 December and the short tail on 6 December. Do not plan a sunset baraat on the 6th.
• Early start: 11 December begins at 3:04 am. That is a real time on the list, and it is a hard time for guests.
• After 12 December: no Delhi vivah muhurat until 15 January 2027.

Match the couple in parallel, not after the decorator has been paid. Kundli matching by name is enough to see a guna total when birth times are still missing. Switch to birth-detail matching the day the times arrive, and do not average the two scores. They are different methods. Mangal dosha needs the time. A name match that never mentions Mars has not cleared Mars.

Dubai and other cities

The Delhi clock is IST. Dubai's list for these December days is on the 2026 muhurat page, and it does not copy the India hours. A window can slide onto the previous evening or swallow a short morning row. The page notes, for example, that Dubai does not keep a separate 6 December window: the 5 December Dubai window runs into the morning of the 6th. If your wedding is in the UAE, use that table. If it is in another Indian city, the nakshatra order stays similar and the minutes move with sunrise. Your purohit does that shift. A blog cannot do it for every town.

If the 12th is already gone

Call the venue before you fall in love with Uttara Ashadha. The 11th and the 12th are the last pair, and they get booked by families who also read this panchang. If both are gone, you are not out of muhurats. You are out of 2026. January 15 is a Friday on the next list, and February is the fullest winter month of 2027. Moving a hold fee hurts less in early December than on the 10th, when every florist in the city is already tired. Look at vivah muhurat 2027 while the 2nd of December is still a real option, so the choice is between two actual dates and not between a date and a panic.

Parents sometimes split the decision badly: one side wants any December day so the year does not 'turn', the other side wants a listed window. The compromise that works is a listed day they can both travel to, even if it is the short morning of the 4th or the 6th. The compromise that does not work is a 20 December function described on the card as shubh. Guests who follow the calendar will notice. Guests who do not will not care. Either way, call the day what it is. Kharmas is a custom you can decline. It is not a custom you can relabel.

A date is not a prediction

None of these seven days promises a happy marriage, a particular kind of in-law, or a year without arguments. They are days when a published panchang's wedding rules line up. The couple's charts, their dasha, and their actual willingness are separate. If Kharmas is being used to pressure someone into the 12th, that is a family argument, not an astrology result. The list is a calendar. It is allowed to say that a week is empty. If you need a sentence for the family group, use the dates and the stop date and nothing else: seven Delhi windows, 2 to 6 December and 11 to 12 December, and no listed vivah muhurat from 13 December until 15 January. People can disagree with the custom. They should not have to disagree with the calendar.

Print the clock beside the date on the card. A guest who arrives at eight in the evening on 6 December has missed Swati and Trayodashi by most of a day, because that window closes at 7:42 in the morning. A guest who arrives at noon on 4 December is still inside Hasta and Ekadashi. The table is the Delhi list. Another Indian city moves the minutes with sunrise, and a purohit moves the lagna for the venue. The date column is the part that travels. If the family is split between a listed morning and an unlisted Saturday, write both plans down as different kinds of events, a muhurat and a reception, so nobody has to pretend the panchang said something it did not.
